Halyas Glimm left home for no reason except to find out what was out there.

There was no warrant, no betrothal, no lost heirloom. A goodbye supper, a caravan leaving the Wagon Flagon at nine for a nominal fee, and a young half-elf who wanted to know what the world held.

He never boarded it.

The wild magic in his blood surges when it wants to. He once whispered, audibly, about killing a senile old elf, took the fireball that answered, and stayed standing only because the surge chose that moment to keep him whole.

His better instrument is nerve. Faced with two hill giants arguing over which of them would keep a gray coin, Halyas floated the party's own coin in front of them with mage hand and explained that he served the same Benefactor. They believed him.

The Glimm estate is a ramshackle house on a plot of burnt shrubs and broken trees, reached by airship and occupied by kobolds who speak in upper-crust accents and take tea while the younger Glimms brawl in the front yard. His siblings — Delia, Emera, Yuna and Pexis — proposed to settle the family's problems by fighting Halyas and one of his friends for the right to decide them.

Two problems stood above the rest. Their sister Billie had been missing for more than ten days. Their mother was ill, and Murdock identified the illness by taste as infernal, out of Avernus.

Halyas stayed through Malinar. He was there for the Unity Tournament, and for what the Church of Malyr did to the city once the tournament was over.

Then he left, for the two reasons he had carried since the manor.

The company he helped assemble kept walking. Halyas went to find his sister.
