Of the six who left Elleris, Aedin was the only one not running from something.

He was in the Temple of Aphiel talking with its leader, Ophelia Urea, about where he had been and whom he had helped, and she asked what she always asked: whether he had found a new group to travel with.

He had not. Then he felt the pull.

The records call him a humble and well-meaning life-keeper of the god of Light and Life, and a warm soul. He stood at the back with a spiritual weapon and kept the others standing. In the cisterns beneath Elleris he beat at an angry spirit while Nerissa worked a lock, and in every fight afterwards he did the same job without complaint.

At Barazar the party split across the rail carts that run through the mountain.

Aedin took the wrong one.

It went deep into the belly of the Spires. Nobody noticed in time. He is not dead, so far as anyone has been able to prove. He never came back up.

Nerissa found his teacher afterwards and told her what had happened. She was saddened. She was not surprised.

The Amulet of Aphiel, carried by the god himself before he was a god and recovered from the cisterns on the party's first night together, travelled on without him. Years later, above the pirate haven of Leviathan, it cracked down the middle and went cold, and across the city Aphiel's clergy collapsed where they stood.

Aedin was not there to see it.
