House Stoneheart once held ten floors of manor carved into the wall of Barazar by the founders of the Underkeep, and a sword that meant something when it was drawn.
By Belediin's generation the manor had been sold. The family lived in a three-storey townhouse in the common residential district, and the sword was a story his grandfather told. The dwarf leading the merchant caravan out of Elleris called him "my lord" and meant it as an insult.
Belediin went looking for the blade.
He has no magic of his own, and he is not fast. The rogues and the wizard leave him behind in every chase the campaign has run. What he does is stand where the party needs someone to stand, and very little gets past him.
Everything divine about him is borrowed, and all of it is borrowed from one object.
The Sword of the Stonehearts came back to him in the ruins of Caer Morghaen. Its sheath did not. That went north on the back of a possessed dwarven child. When he spends the blade's charges to raise Spirit Guardians at full strength, what answers is the shade of the great-grandfather who lost the sword in the first place.
He met Arielle Coldaine in a vision before he met her in the flesh: a mute dwarven girl in great distress, wearing his family's crest on a sheath across her back. He comforted her. Weeks later he watched a fallen goddess open her eyes inside that child's body. He has spent every year since trying to get her out of it.
On the mountain Althea raised beneath the party in Dolonde, Belediin contracted vampirism. He built a coffin to sleep in, and spent a season in the Feywild bargaining with fey royalty for a cure. He got one.
In a temple in Dolonde he knelt at an altar with nothing to offer but his own body, and swore to Morudin that he would accept any affliction laid upon him so long as it did not leave his friends or the world weaker for his weakness, and that he would carry the Stonesword against every wrong he had witnessed for as long as he could lift it.
Morudin was pleased.
His father is not missing. His father fell through the Ruby Gate into the Astral Sea and is a Devil Prince in Hell. His mother is imprisoned there.
Belediin is on his way down.
